MORGAN HILL – A 3.7 magnitude earthquake surprised residents of this small city Thursday afternoon.
The U.S Geological Survey reported that the minor temblor struck six miles north of Morgan Hill, at a depth of approximately 5 miles below the earth’s surface.
“Looks like the event took place near the Calaveras Fault,” said USGS spokeswoman Susan Garcia. “This is not an abnormal, unusual type of activity.”
A Morgan Hill police dispatcher said her co-workers had felt the small shaker but had not had any calls reporting injuries or damages.
An hour after the temblor struck, 878 people in 129 different ZIP codes around the San Francisco Bay area reported feeling the quake at the USGS Web site.
