Was there a bigger local sports story in 2002 than the Anzar High girls volleyball team?

Down two games to none in the Central Coast Section Division V volleyball championship match Nov. 3, the Hawks won the first CCS team title for the school by rallying to defeat Valley Christian-Dublin with a 15-4, 15-8, 15-8 sweep of the final three games.

Six-foot senior Kiley White had a school-record 31 kills in the match, including four straight in game five to give Anzar a commanding 13-7 lead.

“This blew my mind tonight,” said White, who also had three blocks in her evening’s work. “We actually did it.”

Senior Stephanie Smith had four aces while Justine Wiley, a junior, had 20 digs. Casey Norton had five blocks.
