The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 69 presented Christina Muirhead with a $1,000 scholarship to use toward her studies at Cabrillo College in the fall. The Anzar High School graduate was honored July 18 at San Benito’s American Legion Auxiliary meeting at the Veterans Memorial Building.
Muirhead said she was involved in Interact Club and cheerleading, serving as cheerleading captain one year. She also participated in the basketball and swimming teams. She started her college studies a little early, when she enrolled in a class at Cabrillo College during the last semester of her senior year.
“I just finished my summer class and then I will start again in the fall,” she said, with plans to study sociology.
She said she heard about the scholarship from the American Legion because her father is a veteran who had been helped in the past by the group. She also received scholarships from Cal-SOAP and the Community School Foundation early this year at an awards ceremony at Anzar High School.
“I’m very thankful and it’s going to help me a lot in my future plans in my college career,” she said, noting that she might study sociology.
The recent graduate is balancing two jobs right now, one at the Pizza Factory in San Juan and a second at a trucking company.
