San Benito County supervisors unanimously OK’d $118,000 in taxpayers’ money going to local nonprofits.

Supervisors on the consent agenda of last week’s meeting considered 10 separate donations to nonprofits with contracts specifying how organizations will spend money. The highest amount is $40,000 to Jovenes de Antano, while there are three separate $1,000 donations on the low end. The board approved those expenditures 5-0.

Since the Great Recession ended, the county and city have made a habit of giving away tax money—as part of annual application processes—to nonprofit groups that show interest. City of Hollister council members in late 2015 agreed to give away more than $90,000 to local charities, too.

Supervisors on Tuesday approved those donations in separate items listed on the meeting’s consent agenda after previously offering support for a total of $120,000 in charity. Under each item, the county lays out how it expects individual recipients to spend the money in a contract.

Other proposed recipients include Senior Citizens Legal Services ($4,000), Hollister Youth Alliance ($4,000), Advocacy Inc. ($6,000), Community Food Bank of San Benito County ($12,500), Emmaus House ($18,500), Court Appointed Special Advocates ($1,000), Chamberlain’s Children Center ($1,000), San Benito County Arts Council ($1,000) and the Seniors Council ($30,000).
