Stage company production benefits disease research
The cast and crew of San Benito Stage Company’s production
of
”
Beauty and the Beast
”
assembled for dress rehearsals this week prior to the show’s
July 19 opening. Performances continue through July 29 at the San
Benito High School auditorium.
The Disney classic is directed by Jim Achilles of Hollister, who
has a special reason to feel attached to the production.
Achilles’ 16-year-old daughter, Cathryn, is suffering from a
rare disease, Ataxia-telangiectasia, or AT. The genetic disorder
has no known cure. Those with the disease typically experience
progressive loss of motor control and reduced immunity as well as a
markedly increased risk of cancer.
One dollar from every ticket sold will go toward research into
AT. The fund-raising effort is a first for the stage company and
funds will go to the AT Children’s Project.
Cathryn, who depends on a wheelchair for mobility, appears
in

herself, performing as an invention made by Belle’s father,
Maurice, played by Achilles.
