Alcohol was the contributing factor in an accident that sent two Hollister residents to the hospital Thursday, according to police.
Around 5 p.m., Taranda Terry, 23, pulled onto San Felipe Road from Flynn Road heading west, causing a van driven by Michael Wedkind to broadside her in the number two, southbound lane, said Hollister Police Sgt. Ray Wood.
Whether Terry stopped at the stop sign at Flynn Road before proceeding into traffic is still unknown.
Terry, who was unconscious when police and emergency personnel arrived at the scene, was transported to Hazel Hawkins Hospital and then life flighted to San Jose Medical Center, Wood said.
Her injuries are unknown at this time.
Wedkind, 44, was treated at Hazel Hawkins for pain to his left side, Wood said.
“(Terry) was unconscious ,so we couldn’t do a field sobriety test, but the officer smelled a strong odor of alcohol,” Wood said. “At the hospital, we took a blood sample, and we’ll forward it to the DA’s office.”
The 1996 Toyota Tacoma Terry was driving was registered to a Francisco Mendez because her car had been seized the night before when officers cited her for driving on a suspended license, Wood said.
“She’s a reoccurring player with us,” he said. “This just adds to her nightmare.”
The 1987 GMC Safari van Wedkind was driving did not have airbags, however the airbags in Terry’s pick-up truck deployed.
Wedkind was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident but Terry was not.
