First-year coach Hayley Vandercook earned her first victory with ease Thursday afternoon as the San Benito girls water polo team routed a visiting Evergreen Valley squad 20-4.

Ten different Lady ‘Balers found the back of the cage, with Amanda Virak leading the way with four goals. Ali Blake and Sarah Kelso each added three, while Ronnie Stern, Natalie Becker and Kelsey Russell supplied a pair each.

Tiffany Hill, Rebecca Torres and Jeanett Rodriguez each had one goal apiece.

Katie Thorpe and JT Temperino combined for five saves in the net.

It was the first game of the season for the Lady ‘Balers, and it was the first game with the new 30-second shot clock.

“We were done with the offense before the 30 seconds,” Vandercook said. “I still think speed will be an issue if we play some teams that are as fast or faster than we are, which was bound to happen at some point.

“We’re just happy with winning our first game … Hopefully that got a few first-game nerves out of the way.”

San Benito (1-0) will return to the pool next Thursday to host Gilroy at 3:30 p.m.
