Hats off to San Benito County’s freshman State Sen. Jeff Denham, R-Merced, who according to the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association scored a perfect 100 percent on his first term voting against higher taxes and fees.

Amazingly, we tossed him into the shark tank, and he not only survived, but thrived. Small business owners and Sand Benito County ag, who labor under the nation’s worst business climate and highest tax levels, are indebted to him for his courage in helping defeat nearly $65 billion in new taxes and fees proposed by out-of-control spendaholics in Sacramento.

The Gulf War veteran stood tall and strong against radical socialists like Sen. John Burton, D- San Francisco, who proposed job-killing confiscatory taxation legislation that is responsible for making California so unfriendly to business, especially small business. He also opposed Measure G with its scheme to take property for governmental purposes without payment of fair market value in U.S. dollars, in violation of fundamental guarantees in both the federal and California Constitutions.

For this, he has earned our deepest gratitude, and he should be rewarded at the ballot box for standing up again for his community, defending small business owners against attack. Local government leaders should formally thank our senator because it is San Benito County’s small business owners and family farmers that pay the vast majority of local taxes. Our senator’s courage has helped keep small business owners solvent and out of bankruptcy court.

On the other hand, our assemblyman earned an “F” for voting 95.38 percent in favor of increased taxes and fees in the last session. It seems like he never met an increased State tax/fee proposal he did not like. Small business owners ought to remember his record, too, when election time rolls around again.
