San Francisco Giant’s tickets, gift certificates and motorized scooters were just a few of the items included in gift baskets raffled off to support the Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.
Tickets for the raffle, which were $1 each, were sold throughout the month of May and ultimately raised $5,200, said Frankie Valent, marketing director for Hazel Hawkins.
Every year hospital employees determine an appropriate theme within their departments. This year different departments’ baskets ranged from beach-related themes that included hammocks and boogie boards to technology-based baskets with CD players and DVDs.
“Each year the baskets get bigger and better,” said Lanetta Bishop, the auxiliary president. “I can’t believe one actually had a motor scooter with it.”
The dedication and hard work from hospital employees is what makes the raffle a success, said hospital board member Beth Ivey.
“The employees are really a bunch of creative, caring individuals,” Ivey said. “The baskets (were) amazing.”
The auxiliary is a philanthropic organization that donates the money they raise to the hospital and health care district to purchase equipment, assist with construction costs and the refurbishment of various hospital areas, according to a hospital-issued statement.
Between 2003 and March of 2004 the auxiliary donated over $200,000 to the hospital, also providing $10,000 in annual scholarships for students pursuing careers in healthcare.
