Trisha Lee had 21 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Hollister High girls basketball team was eliminated from the Central Coast Section Division I basketball tournament Wednesday at Watsonville 49-36.

The Balers finished the year 16-11.

“Turnovers hurt us,” said head coach Richard Silva. “We missed free throws. Then on the fast break we wouldn’t pass the ball to the open player and then miss the shot.”

Lee was one Baler who shot well from the line, hitting 10 of 11. As a team, the Balers were 13 for 25. But Hollister was burdened in the turnover department with 25.

The Wildcats (17-11) had scoring from 10 different players and were led by Selina Green’s 11 points. The Balers held Watsonville’s leading scorer for the season, Gabby Hipp, to six points.

“What hurt was some of their players who we weren’t expecting scored,” said Silva. “It was frustrating.”

Hollister was also hurt by early foul problems on center Sarah Groman, who subsequently played limited minutes and had just two points and one rebound.

“It was too bad because we had a huge height advantage and they called some over-the-back calls on Sarah which I didn’t think were,” said Silva.

Silva praised senior guard Gina Caianiello for “good hustle.” Caianiello, one of the top all-time scorers at Hollister, finished the final game of her high school career with five points, four steals and two assists. Naomi Ruiz ended her prep hoop career with six points.
