Hollister – The San Benito Lady ‘Balers put up eight points on the scoreboard Wednesday before Robert Louis Stevenson could take a shot on net, and cruised to an easy 18-3 victory.

On the opening possession, Lila Yoldi found Katie Buzzetta in the front of the net, who pocketed the first of her game-high seven goals just 20 seconds into the match.

From there, the Lady ‘Balers never looked back.

“We’re looking pretty clean,” coach Lacey Sutton said. “We’re passing well. Our swimming has gotten faster, and we’re working better together.”

As a testament to San Benito’s stifling defense, RLS took only three shots on net in the first half. The first shot, which found the back of the net, came six minutes and 21 seconds into the first quarter.

“They’re talking a lot out there,” said Sutton of the squad’s defense. “They’re communicating and helping each other out.”

After RLS scored, making the score 8-1 with 39 seconds remaining in the first, San Benito goalie Sarah Yoldi passed the length of the pool to a streaking Buzzetta, who scored with just two seconds left on the clock.

Similar to the first quarter, San Benito would score on the opening possession to start the second, when Ronnie Stern found Buzzetta in front of the net once again.

San Benito held a commanding 12-3 lead at halftime.

In the second half, the Lady ‘Balers shut RLS down. The Pirates were unable to put any more points up, while San Benito recorded five more goals.

It was an all-around game for Buzzetta, whose seven goals was coupled with seven assists. Lila Yoldi added six goals with a pair of assists, while Jayme Telles scored four times for San Benito. Kelsey Russell also contributed with three assists and Ronnie Stern added a goal.

With the win, the Lady ‘Balers remain undefeated in the Tri-County Athletic League with a 5-0 record, 11-4 overall.

On Monday, San Benito defeated Carmel 16-4 behind seven blocks from Sarah Yoldi in net. Buzzetta and Telles scores six goals and four goals, respectively, while Russell, Stern and Lila Yoldi each added two a piece.

Last weekend, the Lady ‘Balers went 3-1 at the Independence Sixers Water Polo Tournament. Unfortunately, the squad’s lone loss came in the opening match, a 10-9 overtime defeat to Pioneer.

From there, San Benito rebounded in a big way, defeating Newark Memorial 16-5, Lincoln 16-2 and James Logan 15-1.

At the Sixers tourney, Sarah Yoldi had a combined 28 blocks, Buzzetta scored 19 goals, Telles finished with 24 goals, Lila Yoldi with seven and Russell with five.

But the squad is in preparation for Santa Catalina on Oct. 16, who remains the only other undefeated team in the TCAL along with San Benito.

Sutton said that despite the scores, as the Lady ‘Balers have outscored their league opponents 91-22, the team will need to work on driving and moving on offense, and not “counting on the counterattack.”

“We are getting them (now),” Sutton said of the counterattacks, “but when we play Santa Catalina, we won’t.”

San Benito will visit Notre Dame next Thursday, Oct. 11.
