Four different Haybalers scored in double digits and the squad as a whole continued to share the ball as San Benito defeated San Lorenzo Valley 59-44 in the opening round of the Condor Christmas Classic in Castroville Thursday.

Brian Haggett and Kevin Burley each had 12 points apiece to lead the Haybalers, who advanced to today’s second round of the tournament. Jason Canchola and Dominic Zanella each added 10 points in the game.

“We’re sharing the ball pretty well,” said assistant coach Dan Quinn. “We’ve got a lot of different guys coming in contributing, though it doesn’t show on the box score.”

San Benito (8-4) had eight different scorers on the night, and managed to hold SLV’s leading scorer, Nick Beevers (14.4 ppg), to just eight points in the game.

The 3-point threat was guarded by Haggett all night, and was held to single digits for only the third time this season.

“Haggett did a particularly good job (defending) him tonight,” Quinn said. “You take away what they want to do and it definitely helps your club.”

Quinn noted that the ‘Balers are starting to trust each other more, and he’s seeing players take on a variety of different roles.

San Benito will play the winner between North Monterey County and Soledad, a game that was not reported at press time. Tip-off is tonight at 8 p.m.

Anzar 54, Santa Clara 48

Morgan Hill

The Anzar Hawks broke out of a four-game slump behind a double-double from Erik Olson Thursday night, and defeated Santa Clara 54-48 in the opening round of the Bulldog Chase Tournament in Morgan Hill.

Olson had 20 points and 16 rebounds to go along with six assists, five steals and four blocks. Ryan Waller provided 11 points as well as three assists for Anzar, who advance to tonight’s second round.

“We did enough good things to win,” coach Ed Cecena said. “I was actually happy to see some positive things and win this game and take it away from them. I’m proud of my guys tonight.”

Anzar held a small lead throughout the game. In the second quarter, Santa Clara pressured Olson down low, which opened up the floor for the Hawks to make open shots, while in the third quarter, Olson went to work and scored eight of his 20 points.

Anzar will play the winner between Sobrato and San Jose tonight at Sobrato High in Moran Hill. Tip-off is at 8 p.m.
