After compiling a league-high in wins with a 5-1 record, and registering a 3.93 earned-run average after tossing the second most amount of innings, San Benito senior right-hander Bryan Granger was named Co-Pitcher of the Year in the Tri-County Athletic League on Tuesday, splitting the honor with Palma senior Julian Larimer.

Larimer went 4-1 with the Chieftains and compiled a 1.94 ERA in 36 innings pitched.

As for Granger, he tossed 48 innings and struck out 49 batters, giving up 27 earned runs on 40 hits while walking 13.

Outside of Granger and Larimer, though, no pitcher in the TCAL had more than three wins.

The accolade supplied to Granger wasn’t the only award for the Balers. As part of the San Benito coaching staff all season, and taking over the team in the departure of first-year manager Jason Bugg, Baler interim coaches Billy Aviles and Mike Granger were both named Coach of the Year in the TCAL on Tuesday.

The two awards highlighted a lengthy list of all-league accolades for the Balers, who won their sixth straight TCAL title this past spring, and did so by winning their very last game of the league season with a come-from-behind 8-7 victory over rival Gilroy.

The first-place finish yielded a total of 12 distinctions for San Benito, which began with Coach of the Year and Pitcher of the Year honors, and also included five first-team selections.

Seniors Dustin Rovella (.310 avg., 10 RBI), Darin Gillies (.370 avg.; 2-0, 3.08 ERA), Matt Vallejo (.375 avg., 10 RBI) and Granger (.413 avg.), as well as junior Marcus Sabatte (.431 avg., 18 RBI), each earned first-team honors, while Ryan Jacob (.372 avg., 10 RBI), Craig Slibsager (.452 avg.,14 RBI) and Jacob Tonascia (.386 avg., 20 RBI) were each credited with a second-team selection. Senior Daniel Arevalo (.441 avg., 13 RBI) was given Honorable Mention in the TCAL, while the pitcher Granger also received sportsmanship recognition.

The TCAL’s Most Valuable Player went to Gilroy junior shortstop Bubu Garcia, while the Most Outstanding Player was awarded to senior Will McCabe of North Salinas.

McCabe batted .333 (16 of 48) for the Vikings this past season and also tossed a league-high 50 innings on the bump, going 3-4 with a 3.08 ERA. Garcia, meanwhile, finished with a league-high .500 (26 of 52) batting average for the Mustangs this past season and knocked in a league-high 29 runs.
