After 2-1/2 years of planning, Betabel Station Outdoor Market has commenced construction after a recent approval of a use permit by the San Benito County Planning Commission.

It is one of the first all-green turf markets in California and will be on about 10 acres of grass lawn, according to a press release from the business.

The seasonal market will be located at 9644 Betabel Road off of Highway 101 and sets up against the Pajaro River near San Juan Bautista. The market will tentatively be opening March 28, according to the business.

The owners of the park Robert Postigo and Frank Paura plan to have a farmers market; arts and crafts; petting zoo; kids area; barbecue area; beer and wine garden; and special events such as car shows, kiddie carnivals, an RV showcase, local bands and other entertainment, according to the press release.

County Planning Director Art Henriques noted how there are a “series of mitigation measures and conditions” the business will have to follow and that the county maintains the right to make inspections. The project as proposed will not require any building permits, he said.

Some questions remain such as how parking will be set up, how booths will be arranged and how the business will coordinate security needs with authorities, Henriques said.

The business, meanwhile, notes that vendor rental areas range from $20 to $40 a day depending on size and location and that parking will be free with a small admission fee.

The free parking area will be located on five acres of lawn and the market is set to have a state-of-the-art drip and sprinkler irrigation system with lush landscaping around the park, according to the business.
