Crabapples perform at Grange: The Crabapples will provide music for the Aromas Community Grange’s monthly contra dance on Saturday, April 10. the Crabapples have become an institution in the Monterey Bay Area. Calling and teaching will be Warren Blier, who has a reputation for providing interesting dance programs designed to please both newcomers and regular dancers. An optional beginner’s orientation is available at 7:15 p.m. The dance begins promptly at 7:30 p.m. and lasts until 10:30 p.m. There is an $8 donation at the door. The Aromas Grange hall is located at the corner of Rose and Bardue streets in Aromas. Comfortable, light clothing and comfortable, flat, soft-soled shoes are recommended. Volunteer caregivers needed: Volunteer caregivers are needed for Tara Home, a project of Land of Medicine Buddha in Soquel. Tara Home is a residence for terminally ill individuals who do not have family members to take care of them or are unable to remain in their own home. Around-the-clock care is provided by trained volunteers, drawn from the community at large, who can offer four to eight hours a week of service. Applications are being accepted for the next volunteer caregiver training on Saturdays, April 24 and May 1 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. No experience is needed. Miss gavilan hills pageant: The 2004 Miss Gavilan Hills/Miss Northern California Regional Pageant will be held Saturday, April 17, at the Historic Strand Theater in Gilroy. Contestants will be competing for the titles of Miss Gavilan Hills and Miss Northern California Regional and the opportunity to compete at the Miss California Pageant in Fresno. The dinner-show package for the pageant includes dinner and reserved preferred seating at the program. Dinner-show tickets are $30 and are advance sales only. Tickets for the show only are $15. Tickets can be purchased by calling 842-5671. Tickets may not be available at the door.
BLM workshop: The Bureau of Land Management has scheduled a workshop on Wednesday, April 14, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Hollister Field Office, 20 Hamilton Court, to discuss the fiscal year 2005 off-highway vehicle grant proposal for the Clear Creek Management Area. The grant provides funds for costs directly related to planning, managing and coordinating the OHV program in the Clear Creek Management Area. Weekend activities at Coe park: On Saturday, April 3, Winslow Briggs, author of “The Trails of Henry W. Coe State Park,” will lead visitors on a five-mile hike, starting at 10 a.m. from the visitors center. The hike will last about four hours. Bring water and a lunch.
Also at 10 a.m., there will be a discovery horse ride, starting at the Coyote Creek Entrance. Bring your own horse and learn about the history of the southern end of Coe Park. Advance sign-ups are required. Call Kitty at (408) 842-6215 or Chere at (408) 683-2247.
An evening program featuring the birds of Coe Park will start at 8 p.m. at the visitors center. Kevin Gilmartin and Barbara Bessey will help guests learn to identify the birds of Coe Park by sight and by sound.
On Sunday, April 4, wildflower hikes will leave the visitors center at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Bike blessing: The Top Hatters Motorcycle Club’s Hollister Chapter will hold its 11th annual bike blessing Sunday, April 4. Bikers are invited to meet at Whiskey Creek Saloon, 201 Fifth St., from 10 to 11:30 a.m. The blessing will be at noon at Sacred Heart Church, at the corner of Fifth and College Street. Kindergarten: Southside School Registration is through April 2, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Proof of birth and immunization are required, and the student must be 5 years of age on or before Dec. 1, 2004.

Senior Legislature: If you are 60 or older, you are eligible to run for the California Senior Legislature. STUDENT ART: Students from Anzar, Gilroy and San Benito high schools have their artwork exhibited in a Gavilan College Exhibit through April 2 at the Gavilan Library, 5055 Santa Theresa Blvd., Gilroy. Admission is free. Thursday, April 1 there will be an artists’ reception from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the art gallery.
Action Pajaro Valley: An advisory board meeting for Action Pajaro Valley is being held Thursday, April 1 at the Kalich Building, located at 449 Union St. from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
