Retail Stores: This free eight-hour training course will help you learn the basics of working in retail. Small business workshops: Gavilan Small Business Development Center is hosting small business workshops on marketing and customer service. The workshops will be offered at the CSDC Office at 1131 San Felipe Road on Wednesday, June 9. The marketing class will be an overview of basic marketing strategies and will be from 10 a.m. to noon. Customer service will explain why customer service is so important and share the keys to quality customer service. These sessions will be from 1 to 3 p.m. The fee for each workshop is $20. SEWER IMPROVEMENTS: The city of Hollister and Harris & Associates will host a Public Meeting to discuss CEQA Scoping for the Domestic Wastewater System Improvements from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 25 at the Veterans Memorial Building in Room 204-A. Wake-Up San Benito County Breakfast: Join guest speaker Linda Daughenbaugh of Fast Travel at 7:30 a.m. May 25 in Paine’s Restaurant, 421 East St., for breakfast. WOMEN’S HEALTH SUMMIT: The second-annual Tri-County Women’s Health Summit will be Wednesday, May 26 at the Corral de Tierra Country Club, 81 Corral de Tierra Road, Salinas. Child Care provider recognition: Child care providers are being honored at a special dinner event Thursday, May 27 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at San Juan Oaks Golf Club, Highway 156 at Union Road. Registration is from 6 to 6:30 p.m. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Bill Michaelis, professor at San Francisco State University and director of Children Together, an international leadership training organization. Admission is free for licensed child care providers and $10 for guests.

STATE ART FAIR: The California Exposition & State Fair is now accepting entries for California Fine Art, one of the largest and oldest art competitions in the state. The California State Fair and special donor organizations offer more than $15,000 in award money. Award amounts range from $40 to $500.

Annual Festival: The Portuguese Society of the Holy Ghost of Hollister will have its annual festival weekend May 29 and 30. A dance will be held at 9 p.m. Saturday, May 29 at the Portuguese Hall at 695 Seventh St. A parade will leave the Hall for Sacred Heart Church at 10 a.m. Sunday May 30 for an 11:15 a.m. Mass. saddle horse parade: The Saddle Horse Parade is still looking for participants. We accept walkers, cars, bands, trucks, floats, etc. If you are interested in being a Parade participant, applications are available at the San Benito County Chamber of Commerce office at 650 San Benito St., Suite 130, #637-5315. Fees are $25 for a single entry or $40 for a double entry. The theme is circa 1800 Western. The deadline for entry is Friday, June 4. Don’t miss the parade on Thursday, June 24 at 6 p.m. in downtown Hollister.

Work Permits: Pursuant to California Labor Code Mandates, students between the ages of 12 and 18 years of age who plan to work this summer must have a “Permit to Employ and Work” on file with the employer during the term of their employment. Students must apply for these permits at the school they attend. Students under the age of 14 are only allowed to work in agriculture-related or entertainment field. Rural students may obtain work permits through their school principal. Employers without work permits for student employees face potential fines of $100 to $500. Kidz Kamp: Summer is right around the corner and the Kidz Kamp Unlimited is preparing to begin. They are offering a full schedule of weekly themes and once a week field trips in or out of town, crafts, games and enriched experiences in music, theater, dance and creative arts. The camp will start June 13 and end Aug. 21. Kool Kidz Kamp hours will be from 9 to 4 p.m. (extended care is available for no extra charge from 6 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m.).
