Dreams & Visions Community Development of San Benito County will offer several housing workshops through its Financial Fitness Clinic Series Jan. 9 and 23, at 800 San Benito St., in the Intero Real Estate Community Room. The topics include: 10 Ways to Avoid Foreclosure, Taking Advantage of Tax Credits, Bankruptcy, a Legal Perspective; Recovering from Loss- Jumpstarting Your Portfolio; Recovering from Foreclosure-Credit Restoration and Special Government Homebuyer Programs.

The workshops are meant to assist local residents in understanding the process of foreclosure and also to help make sense of the home-buying process. These workshops are open to anyone who is thinking about homeownership or in danger of losing their home. The first Financial Fitness Series is scheduled for Saturday, January 9, 2010. You can expect to learn: 10 Ways to Avoid Foreclosure, Taking Advantage of Tax Credits, Bankruptcy, a Legal Perspective, and Recovering from Loss- Jumpstarting Your Portfolio. The second clinic on Saturday, January 23, 2010 will cover: Debt Management, Recovering from Foreclosure-Credit Restoration and Special Government Homebuyer Programs. Both workshops are from 10 a.m. to noon.

The first two-hour workshop will assess how to best avoid foreclosure and how to get back on track with investments. The second will help assess participants’ readiness to buy a home, assist them with money management and credit issues, give them options for financing a home, and most importantly provide them with the critical knowledge for maintaining their new home. The course is tailored to meet the participants’ needs, no matter what phase of the process they are in.

The staff of Dreams & Visions Community Development, a new local nonprofit organization, has been certified through the NeighborWorks® America’s nationally recognized “Training for Trainers” program which was recently offered in San Diego, California.

“Our goal is to help local families keep their homes and help first-timers buy homes and be successful homeowners,” said Holly McWhinnie, Executive Director, in a press release. “The complexity of the foreclosure and home-buying process should not be a barrier to families. We are being pro-active in helping stabilize our community through foreclosure intervention and default counseling. Our homebuyer education program is the first step, and maybe the most important step, that a family can take to achieve the dream of home ownership.”

The “Financial Fitness Clinic Series are co-sponsored locally by Intero Real Estate Services and Edward Jones Investments.
