In this file photo, Sal Valentino, owner of Haircut 5, shakes hands with his 500,000th customer, Ronna Gilani, who will receive free hair cuts for life.

Almost two years to the day after Haircut 5 in Hollister had its 500,000th haircut, the local shop will celebrate 25 years in business.

Haircut 5 is set to mark its 25th anniversary on Friday. The business opened Jan. 18, 1988. Owner Sal Valentino said he didn’t plan to do anything special – not quite like the Haircut 5 habit of giving away free haircuts for life to every 100,000th customer. Haircut 5 and Valentino did just that in January 2011 after the half-millionth customer walked through the door.

“All I really want to do is say, ‘Hey, I’ve been here 25 years,’” Valentino said.

He said the first day the shop opened, it did 38 haircuts.

“I realized there was a really big need for a shop like this,” he said.
