Shore Road flea market gets official denial
San Benito County supervisors Tuesday ended an applicant’s
prospects for a flea market on Shore Road when they approved a
resolution denying the project 4-1.
Supervisors’ decision was expected based on the tone of board
members leading up to Tuesday’s morning meeting. The 4-1 vote
follows the same tally that came from the planning commission,
whose members mirrored their respective supervisors’ stances.

San Benito County supervisors Tuesday ended an applicant’s prospects for a flea market on Shore Road when they approved a resolution denying the project 4-1.
Supervisors’ decision was expected based on the tone of board members leading up to Tuesday’s morning meeting. The 4-1 vote follows the same tally that came from the planning commission, whose members mirrored their respective supervisors’ stances.
Supervisor Jaime De La Cruz had the dissenting vote.
The planning commission in December had rejected Robert Rodriguez’s application for neighboring rodeo and flea market businesses, but the applicant appealed the decision to county supervisors. Rodriguez withdrew the rodeo complex portion of the proposal before a public hearing in late January where about 60 residents spoke for or against the market.
Rodriguez contended how the business’ creation of jobs would offer a positive economic boost for the county. His plans for the market call for entailing 50 vendors, toilets, a food truck and a beverage stand. The activity would amount to about 100 jobs in vending, cleanup and parking.
Residents against the proposal have expressed concern about such issues as traffic, noise, dust and crime. Supporters, meanwhile, have argued there are lacking outlets for families and how the proposal would provide one.
