Sweets with a taste of health
Gillio’s Gourmet opened at the end of May
Julie Gillio recognizes that most people aren’t willing to give up sweets. That doesn’t mean they can’t stay healthy, though.
With that in mind, at the end of May she started Gillio’s Gourmet, which sells a healthier brand of baked goods made from specialty products. She pointed out how they don’t include any high-fructose corn syrup or trans fats. They also are low fat and high fiber, and she tries to use whole wheat and keep out the butter.
Gillio reflected how since she was little, growing up at her parents’ Fairhaven Orchards, she always wanted to sell baked goods. She finally has that chance, and Fairhaven is involved as well. She noted how she uses apricots and walnuts from the orchards.
Her business will be seasonal, from May until the end of September. The baked goods are sold at Fairhaven Orchards fruit stand and the Downtown Farmers Market, and some products also are available at Mars Hill.
