Ray and Peggy Pierce, Pierce and Associates working within Intero in Hollister, were recently among the first in the nation to attend the LEAD experience, where the Pierces met with other small business owners to learn and discuss how to maximize their growth in business and leverage leadership more effectively in their organizations. Topics discussed included effectively tracking metrics, better team-building, brand dynamics, culture and profitability.

“The difference between small businesses that survive and those that don’t is growth,” Pierce said, in a press release. “If you’re not focusing on strategies for growing your business, you will struggle in today’s market. We want to ensure that our organization is equipped to grow and succeed in the years to come.”

The contribution of small businesses to the economy is more than substantial – they represent 99.7 percent of all employer firms in the United States and pay 44 percent of private sector salaries. However, only half of all small businesses last beyond five years, and after 10 years, 70 percent fail, according to the Small Business Administration. Of all employer firms in the U.S., 99.6 percent will never reach $10 million in revenue.

“The market is getting more competitive each and every day,” Pierce said. “It’s critical that small business owners understand the concepts – such as tracking metrics – that apply to small businesses specifically and put those concepts into action. You have to be sure you’re building momentum in the right direction.”

During the LEAD Experience training, Pierce and other small business owners focused on seven universal principles that help guide a business toward growth, including determining company vision and culture.

“When it comes to principles you should run your business by,” Pierce added. “We discovered some fantastic solutions, as well as plans and strategies for implementing these principles. Collaborating with such a high-caliber group of people was incredibly insightful. We all came away with a better sense of how to make our businesses thrive in the coming years.”

The LEAD Experience was conducted by Alex Charfen, CEO and co-founder of the Charfen Institute, a think tank for small business solutions.
