The Hollister School District and Southside School District both announced upcoming kindergarten registration periods.
HSD kindergarten registration approaches
The Hollister School District is opening registration for transitional kindergarten and kindergarten beginning Feb. 9-13. Parents should bring a certified copy of the child’s birth certificate, immunization records including Hepatitis B and the second Measles vaccine and proof of address, such as a current utility bill. Students must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1. For more information, go to the district website: hesd.org.
Southside School registration
Southside School kindergarten registration will begin the week of Feb. 2 and go through Feb. 13. If residents have any questions they should call Mrs. Rocha at (831) 637-4439 x100.
Holte holiday meals ran smoothly
About 500 people showed up to the Christmas Day meal put on by the Holte Holiday meals group, following about 400 in attendance at the Thanksgiving meal. It was the first year under new leadership after several key board members departed after last year’s free events put on at Sacred Heart School’s gym. “The big draw at Christmas is mostly kids because we have a Santa Claus,” said Ruben Lopez, one of the new leaders in the organization. A lot of people also come to get gifts that are donated, while the goal is to feed people, he said. There was an “excellent turnout” of volunteers, meanwhile, he said.
Homeless census volunteers needed
The San Benito County 2015 Homeless Census is looking for 25 to 40 volunteers to create a point-in-time count of people living outdoors in January as part of a nationwide effort to quantify homelessness. Volunteers will join a homeless guide to walk the county from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. Jan. 28 and will add local numbers to other counts occurring at the same time across the nation. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development requires this point-in-time count during the last 10 days of January every two years. The census is important because it increases communities’ understandings of homelessness, helps retain and improve funding for services, and creates data that informs future program and policy planning.
Training for some volunteers was from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 19 in room 203 at the Veterans Memorial Building at 649 San Benito St. in Hollister. A virtual training is available upon request. Hospital auxiliary offers scholarships
Applications for the 2015 Hazel Hawkins Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship Awards are now available. Each year the auxiliary awards scholarships to students who are pursuing a medical or medically oriented career. The total amount awarded to each recipient will be at the discretion of the Scholarship Committee. According to the hospital, auxiliary members put in thousands of hours throughout the year running a thrift shop and the hospital gift shop, and organizing their annual holiday bazaar in order to fund scholarships and purchase equipment for Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital and their Skilled Nursing Facilities. To be eligible to apply for a scholarship residents must:
– Be a high school graduate (or equivalent)
– Be a resident of San Benito County for a minimum of one continuous year
– Be enrolled in health-related course of study at an accredited institution.
– Apply by April 1, 2015

Retired teachers present grants for local classrooms
California Retired Teachers Association Division 26 in San Benito County presented six teacher grants of $50 to local teachers to be used for any classroom activities. The group’s retired teachers support classrooms by volunteering, but the grants allow teachers to buy something not supported by the regular school budget, according to the CalRTA group.
Women’s Club scholarships
The Women’s Club of Hollister Scholarship Awards Program applications are available to young women who are active in community service, academic leadership and activities selected by graduating high school senior females. Seniors with a 4.0 GPA are encouraged to complete the application available at their school, regardless of household size or financial status. Each year $2,000 is awarded from the club and applications are due to be returned completed to their local schools by Feb. 6. For schools located outside San Benito County, please have the application returned by mail by Feb. 6.
Sacred Heart School Ranch Dance
The Sacred Heart Parish School Ranch Dance and Auction is Jan. 31 from 5-11 p.m. at the Bolado Park Pavilion. This event will have the Brigantino’s tri-tip BBQ, full no-host bar, local wines, cold beer and sweet snacks. Enjoy music by Soul Kiss as you dance the night away.
