Art League Spring show
The Hollister Art League will host its spring show through June 1. There will be an open mic night during the exhibition May 13, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Guests are invited to bring poetry, prose, music or song of any style or language. They can read their own work or the work of another. An artists’ reception will be held May 14, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the Blak Sage Gallery of Fine Art, 727 San Benito St.

Multiple shows open at Monterey Museum
The Monterey Museum of Art has several shows on display, including “The Art of California, 1880 to present,” “Adams & Weston and the masters of California Photography, “California Artists and Portraiture,” and more. The museum has locations at 559 Pacific St. and 720 Via Mirada. It is open Wednesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, $2.50 for students and military and children under 12 are free. Storybook Theatre
The Monterey Peninsula College Storybook Theatre presents “Pixies, Kings and Magical Things,” based on the works of Hans Christen Andersen, through May 22, at the MPC Theater, 980 Fremont St., in Monterey. Performances are Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, at 3 p.m. The stories will include “The Emperor’s New Cloths,” “The Ugly Duckling,” “The Swineherd” and “The Pixie and the Grocer.” Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for teens 16-21, and $9 for children 15 and under.

Dancing for a Cure
The Dancing for a Cure fundraiser will raise money for Relay For Life, at the Vault, in Hollister, May 14, from 8 p.m. to midnight. Dinner is 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., with dancing from 8 p.m. to midnight. ARC 2011 Heroes awards
The American Red Cross Monterey Bay Area Chapter will honor seven members of the community at the 2011 Heroes Awards Celebration Dinner May 14, at 6 p.m., at the Barbara McNitt Ballroom, at the Naval Postgraduate School. Honorees are from the Monterey Bay Area, though the proceeds benefit disaster relief and readiness efforts in Monterey and San Benito counties. Flea market
Tres Pinos Elementary School will host its second annual flea market, May 15, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the field at the school. Arts Out Loud
San Benito High School students will have a showcase of student talent May 15, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., in the San Benito High School cafeteria. Some of the pieces on display will include ceramics, paintings, drawings, photography, animation and live music. Awards and a giveaway is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Refreshments will be provided.
Chamberlain’s barbecue fundraiser
Chamberlain’s Children Center will host its second annual barbecue fundraiser May 15, from noon to 3 p.m., at the Mari Davis Memorial Park and Pavilion, 1850 San Benito St. The cost is $25 for adults and $10 for children. All members of the public are invited to attend. The lunch will include tri-tip, chuck wagon beans, tossed salad, bread and a drink. There will be a silent auction, raffle, children’s activities, a bounce house and a dance performance. The lunch will be catered by the Hollister Rotary club. The San Juan Fire Department is hosting an annual pancake breakfast May 15, from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Community Center, in San Juan. Tickets are $5 for the breakfast, which includes pancakes, bacon and sausage.

Celebrate Our Wildlife
The Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation Center will host “Celebrate Our Wildlife,” a free event for people who would like to meet some of the animals who are cared for by WERC volunteers. Some of the animals include a turkey vulture, a red-tailed hawk, a peregrine flacon, several types of owls and other birds, as well as two snakes and an opossum. The event is May 15, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., at Old Machado School, 15130 Sycamore Ave., in Morgan Hill. Donations will be accepted to help defray the cost of food and supplies. Some items that are needed include paper towels, high-quality wild bird seed, store gift cards for grocery, department, pet supply or hardware stores. Mental Health awareness
The San Benito County Behavioral Health Department will be hosting a celebration of Mental Health Month, May 18, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., at 1131 San Felipe Road, in Hollister. Residents can learn about decreasing the stigma of mental health. Light refreshments such as hotdogs, snacks and beverages will be served. The Hollister Dog Owners Group will host the Dog Days of Hollister, May 21, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Dunne Park, in Hollister. Dog Days is a celebration of the dog. CASA pf San Benito County will host its annual fundraiser, the Spring Round-Up, May 21, from 6 p.m. to 1- p.m., at Bolado Park. The event will include a barbecue dinner, dancing and an auction. Bake sale
Leeandra Archdeacon will hold a bake sale May 21, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., in front of the Hollister Safeway store for the Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy. The nonprofit organization funds research, awareness and gives support to families affected by Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Archdeacon is raising money to participating with the half-marathon team at the Disneyland half marathon “Run Spaghetti feed Hollister’s Italian Catholic Federation is hosting a spaghetti feed May 21, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the Sacred Heart O’Reilly Hall, 680 College St. Sit-down or take-out meals are available. Kids’ fishing and fun day
The 22nd annual Kids’ Fishing and Fun Day, hosted by the Department of Water Resources and the California State Parks staff and volunteers, will be held at San Luis Creek on the O’Neill Forebay, May 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Children ages 3 to 15 may sign in from 10 a.m. on. They will receive free bait. Children can snack on free strawberries and whipped cream and do free craft projects. There will also be a fishing simulator for them to try and free pontoon boat rides will be given (weather permitting.) There is a $10 state park day use fee per car. Red Barn Run
The second annual Red Barn Run 5K and 10K will be May 22, at Casa de Fruta. The event benefits the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Registration is $38 for the 5K and $43 for the 10K for runners or walkers who register by May 1. Prices will increase then. The registration includes the run, a souvenir T-shirt, a post-race barbecue lunch with water or a beer (for 21 and older), a best over all grand prize for the male and female top finisher and awards for the top three finishers in each division. The San Juan Bautista VFW Post 6359 and Friends for Mary Sellen will be hosting a chicken barbecue take out May 22, from noon to 5 p.m., at the San Juan Veterans Hall, 58 Monterey St. The barbecue is $10 per plate and includes chicken, salad, beans and garlic. A summer movies series will kick off June 24 at the San Juan Bautista Elementary soccer field, with a viewing of “Megamind.” All viewings are free and start at sunset. The series is a collaboration of the Plaza History Association of San Juan Bautista State Historic Park and the San Juan Elementary home and school club. Earthbound Farms is a sponsor.
