CalFire is staging a controlled 250-acre fire at the Bourdet Ranch, in the area between Los Viboras Road and Pacheco Pass, Hollister.
“The main reason is firefighter training,” said CalFire Battalion Chief Jim Crawford. “But it also is used for vegetation management.
The exercise will conclude this afternoon, he said.
“The Bourdet area has not burned in some time, so to get rid of obnoxious and unnatural vegetation like the Medusahead we go in and burn an area,” said Crawford.
The Medusahead is an invasive species plant.
CalFire stages controlled burning four to five times a year in different locations throughout Santa Clara County, said Crawford. The fires range from 20 to 1,500 acres in size.
