Caltrans officials are inviting residents from the San Juan Bautista area to a meeting tonight to get a glimpse of a $4 million safety project for Highway 156.

The informational meeting and open house tonight, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the San Juan Bautista Community Center, will discuss the Highway 156 median barrier project.

The community center is located at 10 San Jose Street near the Second Street intersection.

“We’ve completed the draft initial study for the project,” Caltrans spokesman Colin Jones said.

The meeting is part of the public comment phase of the safety project, he said.

“This way (people) can come see what our plans are and ask any questions that they may have,” Jones said.

The project, which is expected to begin construction in 2005, will be a concrete median barrier running about three miles long down the middle of Highway 156 from just east of the Alameda out to the US 101 interchange.

Caltrans’ engineering and environmental staff will be there to discuss individual concerns and answer questions.

The meeting will be held in an open house format with no formal presentations.

Caltrans has studied the effects this project may have on the environment and the results of this initial study report are available for review at the Caltrans District Office on 50 Higuera Street in San Luis Obispo.

A copy of the report will also be available at the Luck Library on 801 Second St. in San Juan Bautista.
