Kevin Shelley called for the election and Lt. Gov. Cruz
Bustamante scheduled it for Oct. 7
If you want to know who’s the winner in the ACLU-9th Circuit
Court’s political game, look in the governor’s office. Here’s what
the Los Angeles Times had to say about the endangered Governor’s
reaction to the ruling:
”
Although Davis sought to maintain a studied neutrality in his
public statements, he smiled broadly and appeared upbeat as he
discussed the court action with reporters.
”
If you want to know who the losers are, go out and talk to the
1.6 million people who signed the recall petition. The real losers
are the people of California.

“In the past month, your paper has provided some very interesting reading. Between your paper and my new friends and neighbors who were born and raised in Hollister, I have learned a great deal about Sheriff Curtis Hill, Dennis Stafford and our local law enforcement history.
I’ve been told that Mr. Stafford was responsible for investigating and solving the most heinous crimes in the history of this county. (The pig farm murders where a family of four was killed, chopped up and burned, a murder of two security guards at a local plant and the case of Gus Marlow, a serial rapist and murderer, just to name the three my neighbors talk most about.)
I may be new to Hollister, but if it’s true that Mr. Stafford is responsible for putting away 60 murderers, I say leave him alone. I do not want to see convicted rapists and murderers released to our streets for any reason.
I think it is irresponsible of Mr. Sarsfield as the District Attorney and Curtis Hill as Sheriff to try and have any murderers released because of their personal vendettas. Mr. Sarsfield should be trying to hire Stafford to help investigate the three open murder cases. It seems reasonable to me that if Mr. Sarsfield did that, the killings might get solved.
I would like to hear more about Mr. Stafford’s murder cases and Sheriff Hill’s jail beating trials, that way I can make up my own mind who I should trust and besides, it would be educational and interesting reading as to the history of this wonderful county I now live in.”
“In these times of trying to save money and a budget crisis, one would be surprised at how easy it is to apply for welfare and get the welfare without any trouble. Unfortunately, the county does have a welfare investigator. They did have two at times, but one was cut due to budget problems.
The current welfare investigator spends most of the time investigating employees, instead of welfare fraud. It is understood that she does not go out on referrals made by workers or anonymous phone calls anymore, that it’s too much work for her to do by herself. So my question is, what’s going to happen to all these people committing fraud and all these monies that are lost?”
