“I agree. When is Bruce Kiefert going to stop complaining about our “no show DA” and get to the more serious matter of sirens. Bruce needs to stop talking about the Sheriff’s extracurricular activity of beating handcuffed prisoners and unwarranted background checks and investigations into private citizens and get to the major problem of howling dogs.

We are all tired of hearing about the DA’s lack of compassion for victims of crimes even though they are current front-page stories (Santos, the community center murder and the latest stabbing victim) and talk more about “green energy sources” for San Juan’s already gassy environment.

I hope Bruce doesn’t stop his “howling” until the DA and the Sheriff are held accountable or at least show up for work. The one sure way to tell you’re getting your message across is by the personal attacks on you. Keep them howling, Bruce.”

“I’d like to congratulate all involved there at the Free Lance for instituting this wonderful platform aptly called “San Benito County Citizens Voice & Hotline.”

To some I think the spirit of the column has been lost. I do believe there are a lot more out there who can be submitting more positive views or comments. Then there are the comments from the others in the Opinion Columns that thump their chests and print their names at the end of their statements. Well, good for them. It doesn’t make a person’s opinions or statements any less important when they submit an opinion anonymously. The questions raised by the comments in Citizens Voice, whether positive or negative, have brought about much discussion and thought. (I’ll bet this was the desired effect all along!)

Thank you Free Lance for providing a platform for one of our country’s greatest freedoms – hopefully the responsible citizens will see it for what it is.”

“The Hazel Hawkins Hospital Auxiliary – a nonprofit organization – decided to spend $1,465 to rent the Veteran’s Building for their Christmas Bazaar to earn money for their projects. Not much profit from their work when they have to spend it on rent money. There are cheaper places to hold the Bazaar in Hollister than at the Vet’s Building.”

“Once again, District Attorney John Sarsfield is trying to dupe the public into believing that he cares about victims and victim’s rights by explaining away the seven year sentence for the attackers of the stabbing victim as a result of the way the criminal system is structured. While it is true that “every defendant has the right to plead guilty,” you must reread the very first sentence of the article, “Stabbing victim speaks out” in last Friday’s paper to understand what happened.

The sentence points out clearly that “the District Attorney’s office plea bargained the possible life sentences for his attackers down to just seven years in prison.” Sarsfield’s office made the offer, which the defendants accepted and plead guilty to a lesser offense. Why wouldn’t the defendants plead guilty to a shorter prison sentence if it is offered to them? Or is the DA far more concerned about his precious conviction rate by getting a conviction on a smaller crime on three defendants rather than spending the time and work to get the appropriate conviction for the crime committed?

Once again, this illustrates the fact that the District Attorney is exercising poor judgement in the execution of his duties, except when it comes to flexing the muscle of the office of the District Attorney to pursue his personal agenda. When he is pushed into a corner and has to explain his actions, he does not take responsibility but hides behind the mantel of the law. The overriding priority in this case was not the victim’s rights, but Sarsfield’s personal resume.”
