Everyone is eager for construction crews to finish the long-awaited Highway 25 bypass and for workers to complete the intersection at Airline Highway and Sunnyslope Road, expected to close down the major traffic point for about a month.
Council of San Benito County Governments officials have delayed the intersection work for several weeks – mostly due to issues with utility equipment – and now are set to move ahead in the coming days.
But with the Hollister Motorcycle Rally fast approaching, set for the weekend of July 11 to July 13, COG officials should consider waiting to start the intersection work until after the rally. At this point, another couple of weeks won’t hurt the project.
More important, though, closing the city’s busiest commercial intersection over rally weekend would pose a safety risk for drivers and pedestrians and an inconvenience for thousands of visitors.
We encourage COG to work as swiftly as possible in finishing the project, but a couple of weeks in this case aren’t worth the potential for endangering residents and visitors who’d have to travel on unfamiliar side streets. It’s also not worth the potential of alienating thousands of tourists, visitors we must treat as wanted guests.
