Hollister – A controlled burn on Old Stage Road in the foothills of Monterey County Friday had a host of San Juan/Canyon Road residents worried a fire was tearing through their area, but firefighters said it was just the wind blowing smoke into the valley.

While California Department of Forestry Capt. Rick Espino said he fielded “tons of calls” from worried residents Friday morning and into the afternoon, as far as he knew the burn was controlled and there was no need for concern.

Espino sent a San Benito County CDF fire engine to the burn to stand by if Monterey County firefighters needed assistance, but by press time Friday there hadn’t been a need, he said.
