COOKING DEMO Kneaded Bakery Chef Carlos Pineda throws garlic to the audience during the 2017 San Benito Olive Festival.

The fourth annual San Benito Olive Festival on Saturday showcased the very finest of this ancient crop.

Just eight miles from Hollister at the San Benito County Historical Park in Tres Pinos, hundreds of attendees sampled regionally-grown olives and olive oil, local wines and craft brews.

On the cooking demonstration stage, the talents of Lara Hollinger, culinary arts teacher at Anzar High School in San Juan Bautista, Garlic Showdown Champion Carlos Pineda, chef at the Rebekah Children’s Services Culinary Academy and Kneaded Bakery in Gilroy, Yeojin Yi, chef instructor at the International Culinary Center in Campbell, and Executive Chef Jeff Walker at the San Juan Oaks Golf Club regalled viewers with their creative uses of olive oil.

The San Benito Olive Festival is a nonprofit organization that exists to promote awareness and appreciation of the region’s world-class culinary agriculture, premier artisans and to help support community causes with net proceeds.
