Gilroy’s Elizabeth Rodriguez falls by split decision in
semi-main event

It wasn’t a matter of if Tony Corrales would win, but how.
Corrales, of Hollister, headlined the second annual Bikerfest Box-Off Saturday at the Hollister Motorcycle Rally, and won easily by unanimous decision against Lynal Ayala of Parlier.
“He could take a hit, that’s all I can say,” Corrales said. “I was controlling the fight the whole time, I just couldn’t knock him out.
“I had more power … My skills were better.”
Corrales, 17, recently defeated Fresno’s Luis Villagomez by unanimous decision at The North/Central Amateur Championships in Gilroy two weeks ago.
Villagomez, who defeated Carlos Puga of Salinas Saturday, was part of a nine-fight undercard at the Fremont School in Hollister.
Organizer and local trainer Zeke Lopez of Bull Dog Boxing Gym in Hollister said the fight was a success and drew a huge crowd.
“We had people ask if there were fights the next day,” Lopez said. “I think we’ve proved that if we had more days of boxing, we can pack people into that section. Every time we have a boxing event there, it’s been crowded.”
In the semi-main event, Gilroy’s Elizabeth Rodriguez (3-6) lost by split decision to Fresno’s Jasmine Chacon.
Rodriguez felt Chacon tired later in the fight, and was holding her neck as a result.
“I thought I won,” she said. “I had her on the ropes a lot. She got good punches, but I think [I lost] because of my nose because it started bleeding.”
Gilroy’s Randy Guerrero was originally scheduled to fight Alanzo Newberry of Fresno, but the fight never happened after Newberry was a no-show.
Hollister’s Matt and Phillip Bribiescas each won their respective bouts by decision over Carey White of Sacramento and Mario Rostro of Paso Robles, respectively.
Matt, 13, won his match be split decision, but he said doesn’t keep track of his win-loss record.
“He was okay. He was slapping punches,” Matt said. “People who punch like that, they’re trying to go crazy on you.”
Phillip, 10, improved to 3-5 in his short career after winning by unanimous decision.
“He was like the same as me … He was kind of good,” Phillip said. “I threw a lot of punches at him.”
Brothers Bribiescas plan on attending this weekend’s Throw Down in Garlic Town, presented by Left 2 Right Boxing Club, in Gilroy on Saturday. The card will take place at the California National Guard, located at 8490 Wren Ave. Tickets at the door are $15, while children under 15 are $8 and children under 5 are free. Bouts begin at 4 p.m.
Fighters expected to be in attendance include Derek Shingue, Jackie Gomez, Lorenzo Dominguez, Diego Castillo, Randy Guerrero and Tina Guerrero, the granddaughter of Ruben Guerrero.
Rodriguez will be the semi-main event once again, and she plans on rebounding from her loss last Saturday.
“I’m just hoping to work more – don’t let them try to hold me back,” Rodriguez said. “Just do what I’ve got to do.”
