The Association of Monterey Bay Governments had proposed an agreement with Hollister to install an electric vehicle station in the city, but the council this week denied the request citing concerns about the contract.

Council members Tuesday voted 4-0 against the proposal from AMBAG to install the station here, adjacent to the Veterans Memorial Building.

AMBAG, comprised of Monterey, Santa Cruz and San Benito counties, is planning to use a $25,000 grant from the Monterey Bay Regional Air Pollution Control District to install at least one public charging station in each county.

Council members, though, expressed concern about a contract with unfavorable provisions – such as allowing AMBAG to be released from the contract, but not the city; Hollister having to pay for the installation and any damage, such as vandalism; and no clarity how revenue would be disbursed.

AMBAG, in deciding where to place the stations, plans to rank the feasibility of various locations using factors such as the level of activity in an area and whether electric vehicle owners are likely to be there for one to three hours at a time. Such places include restaurants, theaters, malls, government facilities, parks and libraries.
