San Benito County officials are considering a voluntary time off program for employees as a way to save money during the rough economy.

County supervisors were scheduled to discuss and potentially take action on the program this week, but ultimately postponed the talk until next week’s meeting.

Under guidelines set for supervisors’ consideration, the program would be “completely voluntary,” it would not affect accrual of benefits and it would call for a maximum of 120 hours of time off in any given fiscal year, according to a staff report prepared for supervisors. It also would not cause any breaks in an employee’s time of service.

The program requires that time off for department heads and management employees be taken in eight-hour allotments.
