A county man has died from the flu, according to the public health department in an announcement released Tuesday.
The man – described as being middle-aged – died after hospitalization for the influenza virus, according to the announcement. He did have “underlying chronic health conditions” putting him at a higher risk for complications.
Dr. Alvaro Garza, a public health officer, released a statement in the announcement.
“We convey our deepest sympathy to the family of the patient,” he said. “We know that flu is present throughout our region, as it is throughout the nation. The majority of cases have mild or moderate illness, and the patients recover. Vaccination offers the best protection.”
As of Friday, there had been 45 deaths from flu in California. There had been 1,433 hospitalizations in the state.
In addition to getting vaccinated, the health department reminded residents it is important to practice good hand washing and other good health habits.
According to that announcement, people who are ill should take actions to stop the spread of germs such as:
− While sick, limit contact with others; stay at home, don’t go to work or school
− Cover your nose and mouth with your arm when coughing or sneezing
− Wash hands thoroughly and frequently with soap and water, or use an alcohol-based rub
− Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth
