We have a volunteer program here at CMAP called “COVER 3” that is producing some fun programming for the channels. COVER 3 stands for “Community Outreach Volunteer Events Reporter.” Our goal is to try and have volunteer camera people and editors cover events in each of the three cities we serve. A team of volunteers hit two of the three cities a couple of months ago by covering the San Benito County Open Studios event. The coverage even extended to some artists in Aromas, as well as Hollister and San Juan Bautista.
Opening the program is a very familiar face to CMAP. Producer Shannon Grissom kicks off the video by discussing some of the paintings displayed in her studio, as well as her home.
Her style is big and bold, featuring portraits of relatives, pears, grapes and peppers. She talks about how she names the fruit after people in her life. I was tickled to hear that a couple of the pears are named after staff people here at CMAP! That’s truly an honor.
Shannon also shows off her sock monkey and kazoo, a couple of items that live in her studio and remind her to not take things too seriously, and to keep laughing. Shannon talks about how the seasons really affect her work, and the colors she chooses. If you look at the variety of paintings in the Open Studio video, you can even guess what season they were painted in.
The program then features Edith Bingham, an artist out of Hollister. Her inspiration is clearly California, East Coast, and Asian scenery. Her paints of choice are watercolor and oils, but she also dabbles in handweaving and papercuts, a folk art I wasn’t familiar with.
The process takes a lot of planning and a lot of patience, no doubt. One piece of paper has an elaborate design drawn on the back, and the artist cuts out the design to create an image. It’s a beautiful art form.
The program goes on to feature several other artists, including retired Gavilan Dean Kent Child and his wife Kathy Sheridan, who display beautiful pottery and oil paintings in their studio.
Catch the 75 minute Open Studios San Benito program on Public Access Channel 20 Tuesday, July 27 at 9 p.m., Thursday, July 29 at 1 p.m., and Saturday, July 31 at 9 p.m. Many thanks to the volunteers who shot and edited this project.
Great job
