A fire right near the landfill Tuesday had employees there concerned for a brief time, but local crews controlled the blaze and limited it to three acres, according to the fire chief.
The fire was reported in the early afternoon Tuesday on private property directly across the street from the entrance to the John Smith Landfill, Interim Fire Chief Bill Garringer said. Hollister firefighters assisted Calfire in fighting the small blaze.
The fire started because someone was mowing vegetation “and hit a rock or something,” he said.
Garringer said the flames were in tall grass, but relatively weak winds kept the fire from spreading.
“The wind was blowing in the right direction for us,” Garringer said.
Calfire is fully staffed with wildfire season here, so it used a bulldozer and dropped retardant from an airplane “at the head of the fire,” he said.
