Darn it! I didn’t get under that one.

I would like a dime for every time I have heard that statement from a golfer.

To tell you the truth, the term getting “under” a ball is like fingernails on a chalkboard to a golf professional. If you try to get under the ball, the only way to do that is to flip your right hand into the ball right before impact.

This motion makes the leading edge of the club head ascend into the ball. Thus, it is approaching the ball and traveling abruptly upward. This causes you to make contact with the ball in the center or top of the club and the result is a top or line drive.

If you don’t thin or skull the ball, as those shots are called, the flip of the hands could also cause you to hit behind the ball as you try to get under it.

So the next time you are practicing or playing, try to keep the right hand out of the shot and drive through the ball with the back of the left hand. You will feel contact with the ball first, then a shallow divot after.

This will tell you that you are doing it right.
