Do you pull your iron shots? If you do, I bet you probably fade or slice with your driver and longer clubs.

When you pull a shot, your arms are pulling across your body in the direction the ball is going. Your swing goes from outside the target line (a straight line going directly at your target) to inside your target line in a cut-across motion.

This is the same swing you take with all your clubs. The reason your short irons pull and stay left and the long clubs slice back to the center is the loft in the club. A short iron, say an 8-iron or a 9-iron, has a lot of loft and therefore doesn’t impart the side (slice) spin that a long club like your driver does.

So when you get over a 9-iron and aim left of the green expecting it to slice, it won’t. Play your clubs to slice based on the amount of loft. The high-lofted short irons will be pretty straight where the low-lofted long clubs might slice 20 to 30 yards with the same swing.

Next time you are over a club, think about the loft and how much it might slice. I think you will see better results and lower scores.
