Hollister – District Attorney John Sarsfield has taken a medical leave of absence for an undisclosed amount of time and has left one of his deputy district attorneys at the helm of the district attorney’s office, according to officials.

San Benito County Administrative Officer Susan Thompson said she was not at liberty to discuss the details of Sarsfield’s leave of absence or what type of medical issues he’s facing. She would only say that Deputy District Attorney Denny Wei would be filling in for the prosecutor while he’s gone, but did not know how long he’ll be acting as district attorney.

Sarsfield did not return phone calls Tuesday.

Supervisor Anthony Botelho also had little information as to why Sarsfield requested medical leave, but said he learned of the departure Monday.

“All I know is Denny Wei is taking over the ship down there, but I don’t know for how long or the circumstances or particulars,” Botelho said.

Wei, who spent the majority of the day in court according to personnel in the district attorney’s office, did not return phone calls Tuesday.

While it is unclear which added duties Wei will take on while acting in Sarsfield’s absence, Sarsfield has said one of his primary duties as district attorney is charging the multitude of cases that land on his desk so there is a uniform charging structure.
