San Benito County school districts released the updated eligibility scale for free and reduced meal programs for county students. The scale is based on eligibility criteria from the California Department of Education Nutrition Services Division.
Each school or central office has a copy of the policy, which may be reviewed by interested families.
Children who receive food stamps, California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids, Kinship Guardianship Assistance Payments, or Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations benefits are automatically eligible for free meals regardless of the income of the household in which they reside. Eligibility for a foster child is based on a separate application and solely on the amount of the child’s personal use income.
The income level for a family of four is $29,055, or $559 a week to qualify for free meals, which include lunch, breakfast and milk. The same family requires for reduced lunch meals with an income below $41,348, or $796 per week. The total scale is available at local school offices for those who are not sure if they are eligible.
Application forms are being distributed to all households with a letter informing them of the availability of free and reduced-price meals for enrolled children.
