Cindy Garcia gives her golden retriever Marleau a kiss as she blow-dries him for his next competition Saturday.

All-breed show features primped pups
It is more than likely that at some point, probably coming home
after a particularly stressful day, a human will have gazed upon a
canine with a touch of envy. Lazing on the porch or playing with
one of a dozen toys within reach, a dog’s activity might seem to
epitomize the kind of day that so many owners wish they could
have.

Now that’s the life,

the weary human would mutter, pulling his tired limbs past his
happy-go-lucky companion and into the house.
But to be a show dog; that has to be the height of canine
bliss.

But to be a show dog; that has to be the height of canine bliss.

Last weekend’s Gavilan Kennel Club Dog Show, the 7th Annual Back-to-Back All-Breed Dog Show and Obedience Trials, was a chance for dogs and their owners from all over the region to compete against each other on the grounds of Bolado Park. The finest dog representatives from dozens of breeds displayed their obedience skills, their tricks, and, of course, their dashing good looks in an attempt to take home both ribbons and bragging rights. But in between appearances in the show ring, the precious canines were so pampered, that those among us believing in reincarnation, definitely have something to work towards.

Coats of all hues gleamed in the sun from being readied with the finest of grooming products. A vendor booth covered with bright toys tempted owners to treat their pets with a new toy. Towels that had been dampened with cool water were draped lovingly over the backs of fluffy pooches at just the hint of a rise in air temperature. And, when day’s competitions were over, it was time for a jaunt across the emerald expanse of the Bolado Park lawn. Destination: the shade of a clump of trees as dog and owner shared some quiet time.

Not a bad way to spend the weekend.
