Caltrans, CHP offer tips for the season as rainfall continues

Caltrans and the California Highway Patrol (CHP) are reminding everyone to drive safely during the upcoming rainy season. The public can do a few simple things to stay safe:

– Reduce your speed in these wet driving conditions especially when there are Caltrans workers, law enforcement or tow truck drivers working near the roadway.

– Be aware of electronic message boards and other road signs alerting the public of changing road conditions, lane closures or detours.

– Make sure that your vehicle is in good working order. This includes the condition of your brakes, windshield wiper blades and tires.

– Inspect your head and tail lights to ensure that they are working properly so that you have maximum visibility on the highway.

– Call 911 if you see any hazards/incidents on the highway.

“Driving carefully, being patient and allowing yourself plenty of time are great ways to help you arrive to your destination safely this holiday season” said Rich Krumholz, Caltrans District 5 Director. Caltrans is doing its part to keep traffic flowing by suspending all scheduled roadwork from 3 p.m. Nov. 23 until 8 p.m. Nov. 29th.

The public may view traffic conditions on the state highway system by viewing the Caltrans network of roadside traffic cameras can be viewed at: http://video.dot.ca.gov/

In addition, motorists may call the automated California Highway Information Network (CHIN)at 800-GAS-ROAD (1-800-427-7623) to get current conditions for any highway in the state.
