Chief Jeff Miller of the Hollister Police Department reports that there has been a rash of car thefts in town. From Dec. 27 to Jan. 4 – one week – three cars were stolen.
Miller said there have been more than a half dozen auto thefts recently, and that the cars are usually taken when someone leaves them idling unattended.
“We’re getting clobbered,” Miller said. “It seems it’s happening almost weekly. People are warming their cars up in their driveway, leaving them unattended in front of stores. They come back and it’s gone. It only takes a few seconds and it’s stolen.
“It’s getting to the point where we’re reading about it regularly in police reports,” he added.
Miller also said that drunken driving arrests in Hollister have gone way up this year. In 2003 police made 145 DUI arrests; in 2004 there were 143 arrests; and in 2005 – up to November – there have been 190 DUI arrests made within city limits. Miller said that Hollister officers do not work with checkpoints, like the Highway Patrol and Sheriff’s Department does.
“They were out there working real hard,” Miller said of his officers.
Miller said he is concerned about the rise in auto thefts.
“We can reduce the auto theft if people just didn’t leave their cars unattended,” he emphasized.
