Supervisor Jerry Muenzer is facing stiff competition in June, while Supervisor Robert Rivas won’t face any. San Benito High School Principal Krystal Lomanto might run for county superintendent for the first time and could potentially succeed the retiring Mike Sanchez.
Those are some of the highlights on a list of candidates released by the San Benito County Elections Office following Friday’s deadline for residents to declare for the June primary. Local offices on the ballot include seats for county supervisor, county superintendent of schools, sheriff, district attorney, assessor and treasurer. State offices include governor and the local seats for assembly and the state senate.
In the race for District 3 supervisor, Rivas is finishing his first, four-year term and will do it without having to run for reelection, as nobody filed to run against him.
In District 4, Muenzer is running against Hollister Councilman Victor Gomez and Daniel Recht, listed on the Hollister Downtown Association website as board treasurer with the accounting firm Bianchi, Kasavan & Pope.
Perhaps the biggest surprise on the list, the county superintendent, Sanchez, has announced his retirement and will not qualify himself for the ballot. San Benito High School Principal Krystal Lomanto declared her candidacy for the role, though she had yet to officially qualify as of Monday afternoon.
Sanchez took on the superintendent role in 2009 when former Superintendent Tim Foley resigned, and then Sanchez ran unopposed in 2010.
As for other local, uncontested seats, incumbents running for reelection include Sheriff Darren Thompson, Treasurer Mary Lou Sanchez-Andrade, District Attorney Candice Hooper, Clerk Joe Paul Gonzalez and Assessor Tom Slavich.
Look back for more.
