Aside from two races, the remainder of the primary ballot in San Benito County is defined by a lack of opposition on the local front.
While the District 4 county board race and San Benito High School campus improvement bond should boost turnout Tuesday, an array of key elected seats will be filled without a challenger on the ballot.
Incumbents running unopposed include Assessor Tom Slavich, Sheriff Darren Thompson, District Attorney Candice Hooper, Clerk/Auditor/Recorder Joe Paul Gonzalez and Treasurer Mary Lou Sanchez. Additionally, San Benito High School Principal Krystal Lomanto is running unopposed in the race for county schools superintendent and would succeed the retiring Mike Sanchez.
Just one local race for a seat has opposition. In the District 4 supervisor’s race, incumbent Jerry Muenzer is facing Hollister Councilman Victor Gomez and local accountant Daniel Recht.
Most of the county’s voters will decide on Measure G, meanwhile, the high school’s proposed $42.5 million bond to upgrade facilities.
Other races with local interest include Prop. 42, which would require governments to comply with open records laws; contests for seats in the state assembly, state senate and U.S. congress; and the race for governor.
Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. For more information, go to the elections office website, sbcvote.us.
