A section of the 400 block of Fourth Street was closed this morning because of a house fire, according to the Hollister Police Department.

Police directed traffic in a detour around the area – between West and Monterey streets – so that fire department personnel could arrive on the scene.

The HFD was called to the scene at about 6:15 a.m., said Capt. Dave Lantis. A fire engine and truck were called and 20 firefighters helped battle the blaze.

“It was a pretty good fire,” Lantis said. “We had the potential of losing the entire house, but we were able to confine it to the basement.”

Lantis said no injuries were reported and fire officials are looking into the cause.

Lantis said the fire appeared to be accidental, citing two probable causes – a space heater that was too close to a couch or smoking.

“We’re leaning toward the space heater being too close to the couch,” he said.
