Cyclists fill local roads in Pinnacles benefit
Some 500 cyclists from as far away as Texas and even American Samoa peppered San Benito County roadways with their brightly colored jerseys last Saturday, in the first-ever Condor Classic cycling event.
The Condor Classic offered riders the choice of four rides, ranging from less than 20 miles through the back roads of San Juan Valley to a 100-mile marathon that included a stop at Pinnacles National Monument.
The ride was organized by the county Chamber of Commerce Tourism Committee as a way to promote the county and to raise funds for the Pinnacles Partnership, a registered nonprofit dedicated to promoting the park and its mission.
Plans call for the Condor Classic to become an annual event, according to Kathy Schipper, who co-chaired the ride.
Riders were treated to food stops along their routes, followed by a buffet dinner at San Juan Oaks, where all rides began and ended. A live band, massage services and San Benito County wines were also part of the menu, offering what one rider described as an “over the top experience.”
