SAN JUAN BAUTISTA
In an effort to properly align itself with the future Anzar Hawks football program, the San Benito Cardinals of American Youth Football has formerly changed its team name to the San Benito Seahawks, among other announcements league organizers made last week.
The Seahawks also announced that sign-ups for the upcoming season will be held Jan. 29, while also Frank Casillas, who was the program’s athletic director in recent years, was named president of the Seahawks.
Casillas replaces Diane Castaneda, who he said is still working with the NorCal Conference, the league of which San Benito competes in.
Casillas, though, was quick to note the team’s name change, which was done in an act of support for the school where the Seahawks play their home games.
Since 2009, the youth football team has been playing its games at Anzar High after it helped convert the school’s track infield into a proper football field with goal posts and scoreboard.
Although Anzar was without a football team at that time, the San Juan Bautista high school announced in December that it would be suiting up to play the contact sport for the first time ever this upcoming fall season, and they’ll be using the same field the Seahawks have used since Day 1.
“We’ve been out there (in San Juan Bautista) with them working together,” Casillas said. “Now that they’re starting football, they’re excited and we’re excited for them.”
The team’s new logo will be similar to the NFLs Seattle Seahawks, but will instead include the team’s original colors — royal blue and silver. The Seahawks will remain in the NorCal Conference, meanwhile, playing within the AYF’s Desert Mountain Region.
The team also announced “early bird” sign-ups for the upcoming fall season to take place on Saturday, Jan. 29, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Safeway in Hollister. Those interested can make a $25 deposit, which will hold a spot for the 2011 season.
The final fees will be $25 less than normal registration for those who do make the deposit.
For more information, stop by 610 Santa Ana Road from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday through Friday, or go online to: www.sbcards.org
“We are excited to be a part of what is going on at Anzar High School, home of the Hawks, and now the Seahawks,” Casillas said in an e-mail.
