Four women were sent to hospitals after a car crashed into another vehicle that had rolled over Sunday night on Highway 101, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Rocio Cardenas, an 18-year-old Gilroy resident, and another resident were flown to the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center with moderate injuries, including cuts to the face, said Officer Chris Armstrong, a public information officer for the Hollister-Gilroy area office of the CHP.

The 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse that Cardenas was driving rolled over at 11:27 p.m. Sunday on southbound Highway 101 north of Highway 129, Armstrong said.

Investigators believe alcohol may have contributed to the crash, Armstrong said.

A second car, a 2006 Ford Escort driven by 42-year-old Santa Maria resident Rebecca Wheeler, crashed into the back of the Mitsubishi several minutes later, Armstrong said. Wheeler and her passenger, 38-year-old Atascadero resident Nicole Watson, were taken to a Salinas hospital with minor injuries, Armstrong said.

Everyone involved in the crash was wearing a seat belt, according to officers.

Conditions were clear, dark and dry.
