Gavilan College awarded more than $60,000 in scholarships to 90
students during the annual scholarship ceremony Thursday at the
school. The ceremony provided a chance for scholarship recipients
to meet their donors and for both to be honored.

“We are grateful to the many donors in the community who reach into their pockets year after year to make the dream of higher education a reality for so many students” said Veronica Martinez, director of the Gavilan College Financial Aid Office, which manages the scholarship program.
More details about the awards given out:
-The largest scholarship awarded was the Karl S. Pister Leadership Opportunity Program Award from the University of Santa Cruz. The grant of $20,000 will be presented over two years to ecology major Mason Hyland. Mason is a graduate of Mount Madonna Continuation High School in Gilroy. At Gavilan College he became a leader of the Science Alliance club and an academic tutor, engaging other students in service projects, such as the campus recycling program. He plans to transfer to U.C. Santa Cruz.
-Pooled donations from the Gilroy Foundation, Anne Kennerley, Monterey Mushrooms Ronald McDonals HACER, Ruby Limited, Santa Clara County Peace Officers, Walton Scholarship Program, Scott Malcolm, Silver Creek High School ASB, Temple Island, Loisei and Josephine Trebino, US Bowling, Gavilan College Administrators and T.J. Owens Memorial Fund were awarded by the Gavilan College Educational Foundation to 16 high school seniors planning to attend Gavilan College in the fall and 20 continuing students. The high school seniors are Israel Barron, Alyssa Cabral, Ana Cerda, Sally Chavez, Juan Cruz III, Kevin Downs, Monica Figueroa, Rafael garcia, Janet Garibay, Giavanna Garioto, Laura Lewandowski, Jomer Kirby Polanes, Ana Rodriguez, Andrea Rodriguez, Patty Toste and Laurence Yacovone. The continuing students are Corina Avery, Rafaela Banuelos, Jared Besson, Tamara Chukes, Melody Collings, Michael Dariano, Victo De Reza, David hernandez, Diego A. Hernandez, Luisa Higuera, Raul Hurtado, Neicsa Page Jackson, Craig Lanning, Silvia Madera, Nancy Mejia, Kim T. Nguyen, Esperanza Sanchez, Karissa Sarmento, Ryan Shook and Patrice Wilson.
-The Associated Student Body of Gavilan College presented $500 each to entering students Juan C. Cruz III and Jomer Kirby Polanes, $750 each to continuing students Jared Besson, Tamara Chukes and Jorge Serafio, and $1,500 each to transferring students Raul Escalante and Graciela Nutter.
-A statewide scholarship, the Foundation of California Community Colleges/Bernard Osher Scholarship is provided by the generosity of the Osher Foundation. Leobardo Angeles, Danielle N. De Maria, Jessica Gonzales, Kevin Parnell and Aaron Talavera were awarded $1000 each.
-The Gavilan College Service Learning Scholarships of $200 each were presented to Morgan Barrett, Megan Collison, Daniel Dequine, Raul Escalante, Sabas Gonzalez, Jr., Dane Lamanna, Ethan Ogle, Wyatt Oswald, Lacie Padilla Key, Robert A. Reed and Blaine Sutton.
-The South Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship presented the Florence Nightingale Scholarship of $750 each to nursing students Veronica Barraza, Jamie Chambers and Charmaine Rosales.
-In memory of Henry and Hattie Nerling, American Legion Post 217 presented a $2,000 scholarship to nursing student Melody Collings.
-The Morgan Hill branch of the American Association of University Women provided $1000 each to Tamara S. Chukes and Claudia Ortiz.
-California School Employees Assocation Chapter 270 presented $250 each to Daniel Nickolas Apuzzo, Philicia Leon-Bustillos, Alisa Juarez, Amparo Luisa Mendoza-Patino, Adriana Servin and Aaron Talavera.
-The EOPS Club awarded $300 each to Rhiannon Brundage, Graciela Nutter and Amy Rios, and the Central Coast EOPS Consortium awarded $200 each to Melody Collings and Raul Escalante.
-The Gilroy Fire Fighters Women’s Auxilliary presented $500 each to Kevin Downs and Jessica Mora.
-The Ladies Auxilliary for Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6309 Scholarship of $300 each was presented to Corina Hernandez, Rebekah Komar and Kristina White.
-International women’s service organization California Laureate Kappa Zeta/Beta Sigma Phi Sorority awarded $200 each to Melody Collings and Annette Lewis.
-The Patsy Johnson Scholarship of $500 went to Marvin McCrary.
-The Uvas Valley Retired Teachers Assocaition presented a $500 scholarship to Jayme Telles.
-The Tom Carr Memorial Scholarship of $300 was awarded to Ruben Prado.
-The Isobel Milton Cerney Peace and Justice Scholarship of $150 was awarded to Gilbert Horta.
-The Gilroy Historical Society Scholarship of $250 was presented to Ryan Olstad.
-The Marge Dufresne Nursing Scholarship of $300 was presented to Mary Joy.
